Icon Wines: Review of 2008 Syrah
The transformation of Le Vieux Pin from serious Pinot Noir and severe Merlot producers to the more jovial “Rhone Valley homage” is complete with the release of this new Syrah. Not that the winery has lost its attention to detail and dedication to quality, but the new Rhone Valley inspired wines are certainly more approachable and fun.
This Syrah, from 3-4 year old vines, has 4% Viognier added during fermentation, in the form of pressed grape skins, to lift the aromatic qualities of the nose. Dark cherry, black pepper oil, oak and a touch of cola represent decent complexity in this inaugural vintage. But with such young vines, part of the critique will inevitably shift to the ethereal concept of future vintages – how will the vines evolve with age… is the site suited to Syrah? Based on the present, the future looks bright. Drink 2011-2015.
