2011 Équinoxe Cabernet Franc

2011 Équinoxe Cabernet Franc

Three Bottle Limit Per Customer.

Équinoxe: equal day, equal night. Equal new world, equal old world.

This Cabernet Franc was the first wine that opened our eyes to the uniqueness of South Okanagan. Here, we get elements of both the old and the new world. The lushness and fruit intensity of the new world, marries the structure, natural acidity and complexity of the old world.

Keen followers of Le Vieux Pin know that none of this wine was made in 2010 vintage, as the final quality of the wine while very good, fell short of our exacting standards. 2011 on the other hand is truly worthy of baring this label.

2011 was a very cool but long growing season and resulted in wines of grace and nuance. Bell pepper dolmatas, bing cherry, spicy vintage cigar, rawhide leather and other hard to pin point complex aromas greet you on the nose. The same flavors are displayed on the palate with an amazing focus and clarity while the finish lasts for well over a minute. A monumental wine that is a must buy for lovers of Cabernet Franc.

The price indicates that the winery pulled out all the stops to make this wine. The vines were limited to a yield of 1.4 tons an acre, resulting in amazing ripeness for a cool year. The alcohol here is 14.5%. The wine spent 26 months in some of the best new French oak the winery could buy. The intense aromas of this wine explode from the glass. There are notes of cherry, leather, spice and cigar on the nose, leading to intense flavours of black berry, black cherry, leather and tobacco. The individual with whom I tasted spoke of this wine having “sauvage” qualities, referring to its exotic, almost wild character.
